Old Mahood Lumber building in Kincardine demolished

October 13, 2017

The old Mahood Lumber building is gone.

Workers tore down the final west wall, Friday, Oct. 6, after about two months of demolition.

Located at the intersection of Durham Market South and Queen Street, just south of the Kincardine Arts Centre and Victoria Park in Kincardine, the structure was demolished to make way for a 30-unit condominium complex by Kincardine developer Keith Battler. The six-storey building will include a ground-floor parking lot.

Battler expects to have the land cleared by this fall and then begin building in late spring or early summer next year. He purchased the property nine years ago and first brought his proposed housing project to Kincardine council about six years ago.

Originally the Farley Lumber and Planing Mill, the building has stood there since 1919. It housed Mahood Lumber Co. Ltd. until that company moved to Highway 21 North, south of Kincardine Home Hardware, in 1989. Mahood Lumber subsequently adopted the Tim-Br Mart identification.

The Durham Market South property was later transferred to Cliff Hewitt. Most recently, the building was home to Sunset Blinds, Creative Casuals and Bruce County Flooring.
