Kincardine couple raises $3,000 in Movember on-line auction

Melissa MacDonald (right) and Shane Watson of Kincardine have raised $3,059 for the Movember Foundation, following an on-line auction held on the weekend.

MacDonald said that's more than twice what they raised last year in a rather impromptu fund-raiser for the foundation.

"Last year, Shane came home and he had this awful moustache," she said. "So, I asked him what would it take to get him to shave it off, and he said $500. I posted that on-line and we ended up raising $1,500 for the cause. It was so successful that we hoped to try it again in 2017."

This year, MacDonald requested donated items for an on-line auction. She received about 85 items and posted photos of them on Facebook, with the auction running from Friday, Nov. 10, at Noon, to Saturday, Nov. 11, at 5 p.m. If people wanted to bid on an item, they just commented with their bid on the corresponding photo.

The auction included many terrific items, such as original artwork, dance classes, home-baked goodies, natural cleaners, pet supplies, Blyth Festival tickets, an Ainsdale Golf Course package, jewellery, photography sessions, gift certificates, and more.

MacDonald said 100 per cent of the proceeds go to the Movember Foundation which is the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale, year round. The organization is addressing some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention.

"Thank you to everyone who made this such a success," said MacDonald. "We're looking forward to doing it again next year!"
