It's a game of rockets and space ships for the Kinetic Knights (FRC Team 781), as they take on the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Destination Deep Space robotics challenge for 2019.
About 25 team members and mentors gathered at the Holiday Inn, Kincardine, Saturday morning, Jan. 5, to watch the official kick-off, with FIRST founders Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers and others announcing this year's game.
This is the 30th season of FIRST, and teams will be pushed to the outer limits of the universe in Destination Deep Space presented by The Boeing Company.
The Kinetic Knights now have six weeks to build a robot and program it so it can attach hatch panels on two rockets and a cargo ship, and fill them with valuable cargo from the planet, in order to earn points to win the game.
The robot will begin and end on its habitat and can also earn points by landing on the higher-level platform at the end.
Team 781 will be working steadily on its robot until Feb. 19 at 11:59 p.m., when the team must stop and bag the robot for competition.
This year, the Kinetic Knights are competing in district events at Georgian College in Barrie at the first of March, and at Western University in London at the end of March. If they qualify, they move onto the Ontario championships and then the worlds.
