ALBERTA SMITH (nee MacKINNON)

February 27, 2026

Alberta Smith (nee MacKinnon) of Tiverton died Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, at Huron Shores Hospice, Tiverton, just shy of her 99th birthday. Beloved mother of Dianne (Jim) Sanderson, and Carolyn Hamilton (Don Roppel); and mother- in- law of Sandra Smith. Cherished grandmother of Kerry, Jeff (Sarah), Julie (Trevor), Campbell (Alice), Robert (Kate) and Meghan; and great-grandmother of Kailynn, Bryson, Nicole, Branden, Brock, Quinn and Luke. Predeceased by her husband, John L. Smith (2014); son, Gary Smith (2012); grandson, Sean Smith (2016); siblings, John L. (Alma) MacKinnon, Clara (Jim) Gilchrist, and Bruce (Donelda) MacKinnon; parents, Lachlan and Lucinda (nee Bell) MacKinnon; sisters-in-law, Eunice (Murray) Farrell, Jean (Alan) Dent, and Christena (Bob) Scott; and parents-in-law, Hugh and Millie (nee Shewfelt) Smith. Alberta was deeply involved in her community for her entire life. Starting as a school teacher in 1944, at the fresh age of 17, she taught all eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse. Some students in her school were practically as old as she was. Sept. 18, 1948, she married John L. Smith and they farmed just west of Tiverton. Alberta was well-known to many people as the librarian at the Tiverton Public Library. Being granted a library card was a very life-altering achievement for many young people. Always active within Knox Presbyterian Church in Tiverton, Alberta led CGIT for more than 25 years, among many other church activities. One of her many great accomplishments was writing a wonderful history of Knox Presbyterian Church in Tiverton. Alberta’s warmth, wisdom and wit will be deeply missed. She leaves a lasting and extraordinary legacy for which we are all very grateful. And the Jays have lost their most loyal fan. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 1, 2026, from 4-7 p.m., at the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home, Kincardine. The funeral will be held Thursday, April 2, 2026, at 11 a.m., at Knox Presbyterian Church, Tiverton, with Rev. Richard Warne presiding. Reception to follow in the church hall. Spring interment, Tiverton Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations to Knox Presbyterian Church in Tiverton, or the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
