HUGH MASON

March 1, 2026

Hugh Mason of Ripley died, peacefully in his sleep, with his beloved wife by his side, March 1, 2026, at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre, Kincardine, in his 90th year. Survived by his wife of 67 years, Patt (nee Raney). Loving father of his daughters, Sharyll and Shelley; and son, Gregg. Hugh shared his love with his son-in-law, Kevin Meldrum; and daughter-in-law, Monique (nee Vossen). He was a very proud grandfather of Chanel (John), Brett (Alexandra), Caressa, Jacob (Jessica) and Logan; and cherished his four great-grandchildren, Maddy and Ryan, and Hughie and Kenzie. Also survived by his brothers-in-law, Lynn Farrell and David Raney; and sister-in-law, Margaret Raney. Fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends. Hugh was the son of the late Robert “Bert” and Ann Mason. Also predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Mason and his wife, Lois; sister, Ruby Walden and her husband, Ray; and sister, Marjorie Farrell; as well as his in-laws, Doug Raney and Marlene Jones (Raney). As a young man, Hugh learned to work hard on the fourth-generation family farm in Huron-Kinloss. He was an enthusiast of all sports, but baseball was his one true sport. He played catcher through his baseball-playing years, even continuing to play weekly into his 80th year. Some of Hugh’s most impactful contributions centred around coaching local baseball teams, as well as many years behind the plate, umpiring. In his younger years, Hugh was dedicated to being involved in his community through countless hours volunteering. As a result, he was honoured as a recipient of the Ontario Citizenship Award. He spent 17 years as the leader of the local 4-H beef calf club. He was a member and past-president of the Ripley Agricultural Society, as well as a Huron-Kinloss councillor, past deputy reeve, and co-ordinator of the local Heart and Stroke Foundation. Hugh was known for his wonderful sense of humour. He loved to tell a good story or joke, and was guilty of playing a few good practical jokes too! In his spare time, he enjoyed playing a game of cards, and bridge quickly became a favourite. As a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Hugh left a permanent mark etched on our hearts and will forever be missed. In life he loved, in heaven he rests. God took his hand and we had to part. Visitation will be held at the MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Home, Ripley, Thursday, March 5, 2026, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., followed by a private memorial service, Friday March 6, 2026. onations in Hugh’s memory are greatly appreciated to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation.
