Avid Pickleball players clear snow to play the game outside

December 6, 2020

Several local seniors didn’t let a bit of snow stop them from playing Pickleball on the tennis courts at the end of Penetangore Row, Kincardine, Wednesday afternoon.

They arrived with shovels and cleared off the snow, set up the nets and played their game outside in the sunshine.

Taking part, were Arnie Dyck, Julie Brown, Mary Gallant, Cathy Ellis and Terri Rintoul. They are trying to stress to Kincardine council the importance of outdoor courts for the many who enjoy this fast-growing indoor and outdoor activity.

“We have one tennis court with Pickleball court lines, and the basketball court behind has been marked for Pickleball as well,” says Rintoul. “We've been playing on these two courts since the spring, shortly after COVID-19 (Coronavirus) restrictions began. We would like to see the municipality get some outdoor Pickleball courts for this popular sport.”

She says there are about a dozen players involved, with about five to eight, on average, coming to play each week.

“We have the use of a portable net from the Davidson Centre which we use on the second court, and Huron-Kinloss Township puts up the net on the front court from spring till the late fall. Playing on a windy day can make it a challenge for sure but we have some fun and lots of laughs.”
