What are the real costs to the natural gas pipeline for Kincardine, asks reader

To the Editor:
RE: Natural gas pipeline for Kincardine and surrounding area

All we ever hear is that there are to be great savings when we get natural gas to our homes. No one tells us the cost per household.

Here are some of my questions regarding the cost per household:

  • What is the cost per foot to come by your property?
  • What is the cost to make a connection to your house?
  • What is the cost for the following - new furnace/air conditioner; new hot water tank; new stove; new dryer, new barbecue; new fireplace/change orifice; finance charges; delivery charges; maintenance charges?

I see a problem with all the subdivisions that are currently using baseboard-heating only (about 50-60 per cent of the town). What is the cost of converting them to natural gas?

I hear that Union Gas doesn't want to bring a pipeline to town - the company would like to build bulk storage instead.

What about our winters when the highways are closed? There would be delivery delays as we experience with fuel oil or propane.

What are the real costs, and more importantly, after spending thousands of dollars, what the real savings we have?
