The mystery of love!

The mystery of love!
Only in our imaginations can we see the meetings, proposals, planning and weddings of many of our ancestors.

In more recent years, we can read newspaper reports of marriages and perhaps find a picture. We might come upon an invitation or an announcement in Treasure Boxes or between the pages of a family bible.

For our parents and grandparents, we can see the depth of a love that lasted many years, the sharing of responsibilities and pleasures, and the caring for one another during periods of illness.

We may also wonder about the maiden aunts and bachelor uncles who tend to fill quite a number of spaces on our trees. Why did they never marry?

In my Grandpa Pollock’s family, Aunt Margaret (right) was the only one who remained single.

As a child, I did not ask about her life story but a recent find has raised all kinds of questions. This is what Mum’s cousin, Laura Finlay Hendry, told her family about Aunt Margaret’s love life:

Aunt Margaret was about to be married. She was dressed for the ceremony and about to put on her hat when the Lord said to her, “Margaret, you are making a mistake.” Thereupon, she called off the wedding.

Who was the jilted groom? What was his reaction? Where was the wedding to take place? Were there guests assembled? When did this surprising event occur? Might she have had misgivings beforehand? Did she have any other “men friends” before or after? Why did my mother not know this story?

Another family mystery!
