To the Editor:
It has been a privilege for me to stand as the Liberal Party of Canada candidate in Huron-Bruce and I have to thank the thousands of people who supported me, a simply remarkable campaign team and my family.
In the end, we did not achieve the result we wanted in Huron-Bruce. But we more than restored the Liberal party's standing, ending up with 23,126 votes to incumbent Conservative Ben Lobb's 25,803. And we can all celebrate new Liberal prime minister Justin Trudeau's triumph across Canada.
As I said in my speech to supporters Election Night (Oct. 19) at Ainsdale Golf Course, south of Kincardine, Trudeau's victory is a watershed in Canada's political culture, an end to a decade of cynicism and fear. And proof that once again, you can win in Canadian politics without negative attack ads and by putting forward a relentlessly positive and optimistic program.
Election Night was a great moment for our country - proof, that in Canada, better is always possible.
After celebrating the Liberal victory with my supporters in Kincardine, I drove with my phenomenal campaign manager Rod MacDonald to Goderich, to congratulate Ben Lobb in person on his victory.
During the wet and windy drive to Goderich, a deer leapt onto the road in front of our vehicle. Rod managed to swerve so that in the end, we clipped the animal's antlers. It was a close call. But the buck survived and will live to see another day.
Thanks
