OFFICERS RESPONDING TO VEHICLE COLLISIONS INVOLVING DEER

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) - The South Bruce OPP has been responding to motor vehicle collisions involving deer. Deer are more active this time of year as this is their mating season, also known as rutting season.

Between 7:06 a.m. Oct. 21, and 7:06 p.m. Nov. 2, South Bruce OPP officers responded to 29 crashes involving deer. No injuries were reported at any of the scenes.

Last year, between 8 p.m. Nov. 4, and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 24, officers responded to 48 crashes involving deer. No injuries were reported at any of the scenes.

The South Bruce OPP is offering drivers the following tips to help reduce your chances of hitting a deer:

  • Be especially attentive from sunset to midnight and during the hours shortly before and after sunrise. These are the highest-risk times for deer-vehicle collisions.
  • Drive with caution when moving through areas known to have a large deer population. Remember - deer seldom run alone. If you see one deer, others may be nearby.
  • When driving at night, use high-beam headlights when there is no oncoming traffic. The high beams will better illuminate the eyes of deer on or near the roadway.
  • Slow down and blow your horn with one long blast to frighten the deer away.
  • Brake firmly when you notice a deer in or near your path but stay in your lane. Many serious crashes occur when drivers swerve to avoid a deer and hit another vehicle or lose control of their cars.
  • Always wear your seatbelt. Most people injured in deer-vehicle crashes were not wearing their seatbelt.
  • Do not rely on devices, such as deer whistles, deer fences and reflectors, to deter deer. Slow down, stay in control and stay alert.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit a secure web-tip at www.cstip.ca, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
