December cannot only get busy, it can get downright crazy busy. So it’s important to look after yourself at this time of year.
As individuals, It’s easy to be consumed by work, life and seasonal activities. You may not think of yourself as often as you should – especially if you are looking after someone else. So I devote this column as a reminder that everyone should take a moment every day to remember what is important to you and to take time to re-energize yourself.
As busy people, parents, sweethearts, grandparents and even children, we can literally be run off our feet trying to meet the daily demands of December, and get everything done before the end of the year – from dinners to celebrations, and sports events to supporting and meeting other people’s needs. If you’re run off your feet, it’s not easy to remember to slow down and check in on yourself. Our cat, Big Tigg, loves to chill; remember to find happiness in the little things in life
From a mental health perspective, it is essential to look after yourself. To get the rest you need, to eat well, and to exercise (if you can). Even light chores, such as errands or jobs around the home or at work, provide significant benefits for better health. Doing one or more of these things promotes feelings of happiness, boosts your mood and helps build resiliency. As a teenager, I remember cleaning the house with my mom as she cranked up the song “Joy to the World (Jeremiah was a Bullfrog)” made famous by the band, Three Dog Night. Mom made cleaning fun!
Take that moment in the day to remind yourself about what is important. Reflect on the joy of making that meal for yourself or for the family. Most important is to find time to pamper yourself. If you can, treat yourself with a movie on TV, or a manicure or facial, or even try attending one of the local Legion events, such as Trivia Night! I was totally surprised by how much fun my husband, Jim, and I had when friends invited us. Or simply try to clear your mind by taking 10 deep breaths.
Mental health is just as important as your physical health. How you feel will influence those around you.
Try to surround yourself with positive people and positive energy. If you’re with a friend or friends you trust, don’t be afraid to unload about your day or week or whatever is bothering you. Get it off your chest - that’s what friends are for. I have a great friendship network. My friends simply pick me up when I’m down, and remind me I’m awesome. So don’t be shy about reminding yourself that you are awesome too!
When you look after your mental health, it means you can be there for others when they need you. And, of course, you can be there for yourself. Our dog, Joplin, loves the snow

As a reminder, you should always consult first with a medical professional or coach before starting a fitness program.
