​Bervie W.I. learns about resources available for the blind

The Bervie Women’s Institute met at the Bervie United Church, Wednesday morning, with the focus on “health.”

President Bev Berndt welcomed everyone and opened with the poems, “An Irish Friendship Blessing” and “An Easter Prayer,” followed by the usual openings and land acknowledgement.

The Roll Call, “What would you miss most if you lost your eyesight?” was answered by 10 members and one visitor.

Betty Jean White read the minutes of the last meeting and Islay Eby gave the treasurer’s report. Sandra MacDonald gave the Sunshine Report with many sympathy cards being sent to those in our community.

Ellen Waye reported on District and Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario (FWIO) activities. Donations will be made to the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation capital campaign, Drop-in at the Bridge in Kincardine, and the Kincardine and Tiverton Agricultural Societies.

Roots of Bruce is being held in Walkerton April 18-19 – pies will be donated. Betty Jean and Dianne Wilson have the programs ready for 2024-25 and we thank them for preparing them. A plant sale with some baking, will be held at the Bervie United Church, Saturday, May 18.

Bev Berndt then presented some interesting information about the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB). She outlined some tips on how blind people use braille, select their clothes and some of the aids for those with sight issues. CNIB dogs are also available, and there are audio books, walking sticks, magnifying glasses of all kinds, watches, lifelines, doorbells, special phones and televisions, etc. It is important to talk directly to a blind person. The CNIB will provide an assessment regarding your needs.

The annual meeting will be held at the church April 3 at 10 a.m., with a potluck lunch to follow. Our annual fees will be due at that time.
