​NWMO releases updated research that reinforces DGR can be safely constructed in South Bruce

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has released updated research, reinforcing confidence that a Deep Geological Repository for Canada’s used nuclear fuel can be safely constructed at the proposed Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON)-South Bruce site.

That’s the word from the NWMO in a press release issued Monday.

Originally published in 2022, the updated report provides a comprehensive summary of the NWMO’s understanding of the site.

Below, are highlights of what’s new in the report:
 

• Site-specific geological information has been included for the first time (previous studies relied on analysis from another nearby location)
• The engineering design of the repository has been advanced to confirm the underground layout fits within the site
• The first site-specific safety assessment has been completed
• Additional testing has been conducted testing the durability of used fuel containers

The report was presented to the South Bruce Community Liaison Committee in February, followed by Thursday night’s presentation by GHD which peer-reviewed the NWMO report.
