Impaired driver runs out of gas in stolen truck

(GODERICH, ON) -  The Huron County OPP has charged a 35-year-old driver of Bruce County with a number of Criminal Code offences after police received a call for assistance Nov. 10.

At approximately 6:15 a.m., Huron OPP officers received information about a vehicle that was parked in the middle of the road at the intersection of Elgin Avenue West and Wellesley Street in Goderich.

An officer arrived on scene to find a man sitting in the driver’s seat of a 2016 Dodge Ram pick-up truck. The unco-operative man failed to provide a driver’s licence and initially refused to exit the truck. Eventually, he exited his vehicle and while speaking with the man, the officer observed several signs he was impaired by a drug. He was arrested for Care & Control of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired and Drive While Disqualified. A search incident to arrest was completed which resulted in police seizing a small quantity of methamphetamine and marijuana.

The man was then given a demand to submit to a Drug Recognition Evaluation. He was transported to the Huron OPP detachment for this test. Ultimately, he refused to complete the evaluation tests and during this process, he physically assaulted an assisting officer. Further investigation also revealed the Dodge Ram pick-up truck had been stolen a few days earlier from a car rental agency in Hanover.

As a result, Jason EYLES, 35, of the Municipality of Brockton has been charged with Care or Control While Impaired, Possession of a Schedule I Substance (Methamphetamine), Possession of a Schedule II Substance (Marijuana), Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000, Fail to Submit to a Drug Evaluation, Assault Peace Officer and Drive While Disqualified.

He remains in custody with a video court appearance scheduled for the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich, Nov. 24.

Note: The investigating officer would like to speak with an elderly couple that was on scene acting as Good Samaritans.  They had a fuel can with them and were getting ready to help the driver prior to police arrival. Any witnesses to this event are asked to call the Goderich OPP Detachment directly at 519-524-1074 or 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.

*THESE CHARGES HAVE YET TO BE PROVEN IN COURT*
