SVCA issues flood outlook statement for Saugeen Watershed area

The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) is advising of high-water levels and potentially unsafe conditions in local watercourses.

A strong low-pressure system has been moving across the province since Thursday, bringing significant rain. In the past 24 hours, 20-35 millimetres (mm) of rain have been recorded throughout the watershed. An additional five to 10 mm is forecasted for Friday, plus another 10-15 mm overnight. Rain is expected to gradually taper off into Saturday morning.

Water levels are increasing rapidly and are expected to continue rising throughout the day and into the weekend; this could result in unsafe conditions in and around local watercourses. While significant flooding is not expected, watercourses could reach or exceed bank-full conditions, with minor flooding in low-lying areas. More extensive flooding is possible should the region receive rainfall amounts greater than what is currently forecast.

Elevated water levels, fast-flowing water, and slippery conditions along watercourse banks are extremely dangerous. The public is reminded to stay away from all watercourses and structures, such as bridges, culverts, and dams. Recreational river users should take extra precautions, as higher water levels and faster flows are expected to persist throughout the weekend.

SVCA staff will be closely monitoring the situation and will provide an update if conditions change. This message will remain in effect through the end of Monday, April 15.
