Dr. Gareth Doherty receives Meritorious Service Medal

Dr. Gareth James Michael Doherty of Ottawa, son of Tony and Catherine Doherty of Kincardine, was presented with the Meritorious Service Medal, by Governor General Mary Simon, Wednesday, May 8, at Rideau Hall.

Created by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, June 6, 1991, the Meritorious Service Medal (military division) recognizes a military deed or activity that has been performed in a highly-professional manner or of a very high standard that brings benefit or honour to the Canadian Forces.

Gareth Doherty, who works for the federal government in the national defence department, received this award for demonstrating exemplary leadership and dedication in developing the Total Health and Wellness Strategy of Canada’s Department of National Defence.

With the goal of promoting well-being and suicide prevention among thousands of military personnel, civilian employees and their families, this successful program has more than proven its worth.

“We are very proud of him,” said Catherine and Tony Doherty who attended the ceremony.
