​About 70 volunteers assist with PRWIN community tree-planting project

About 70 volunteers worked with the Pine River Watershed Initiative Network (PRWIN), planting trees on the property of Joan Storrey, on Highway 21, north of Concession 7, in the Municipality of Kincardine, Saturday morning, May 4.

PRWIN chairman David Grant welcomed everyone and noted that the weather was sunny and warm - perfect for planting trees.

Joining PRWIN members and their families, were members of the Kincardine Scouts, the Kinetic Knights Robotics Team, Sawjan Samanvay Sanatan Centre, Point Clark Beach Association, Enbridge, and 4-H Conservation leaders.

The planting site is supported by the 2023 Bruce Power's Environment and Sustainability Fund and by Canada-Ontario Agreement (COA) funding, Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks through the Great Lakes Program.

The volunteers hand-planted seedlings, large stock trees and shrubs along with plants to create a pollinator garden around an existing pond area.

Grant said the tree-planting was done on Storrey’s land and that of her brother, because they are long-time supporters of PRWIN. The planting is expected to improve the problem of wash-outs along the river on the property.

To wrap up the morning planting session, Mercato Pizzeria provided pizza for the hard-working crew.

PRWIN FREE SEEDLING PROGRAM

This spring, 5,500 seedlings were handed out during PRWIN’s annual "Free Seedling Give-Away Program." Created in 2014, it is a very popular community outreach program.

PRWIN directors and volunteers sorted and packaged 90 personal orders. PRWIN set up a seedling pick-up location with a local landowner. Participants from Huron-Kinloss and surrounding area placed their orders in the fall.

Some of the orders supported the Kincardine Naturalization Project - Savage Park, 2nd Kincardine Scouts and the Ripley-Huron Community School Grade 5 class and Green Team.
