South Bruce OPP report impaired driver; and Canada Road Safety results

POLICE ARREST IMPAIRED DRIVER AT WALKERTON RIDE CHECK

(WALKERTON, ON) - May 19, at 2:09 a.m., a South Bruce OPP officer arrested a driver while conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) checkpoint on Durham Street in Walkerton.

The driver was found to have been drinking alcohol, was placed under arrest and taken to a Qualified Breath Technician for breath tests.

Jonathan STRAUSS, 34, of Brockton was charged with Operation while impaired - blood-alcohol concentration (80-plus).

The driver will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date.

An impaired driving charge includes an immediate 90-day driver's licence suspension and immediate vehicle impoundment for seven days.

CANADA ROAD SAFETY WEEK RESULTS

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) - Members of the South Bruce OPP took part in the annual Canada Road Safety Week which took place from May 14-20. The campaign is aimed at reducing road accidents by focusing on impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and seatbelt use. The campaigned included increased enforcement and public awareness.

Over the course of the seven-day campaign, the South Bruce OPP officers reported the following:
 

• Speeding: 55
• Impaired charges: 5
• Seatbelt charges: 3
• RIDE programs: 8

The remainder of charges fall under the Highway Traffic Act, Liquor Licence Act, Off Road Vehicles Act, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

OPP officers will continue to focus throughout the summer on the "Big Four" factors in serious and fatal collisions: aggressive driving, inattentive driving, impaired driving, and lack of occupant restraints. This includes the major highways and all other roads.

The OPP reminds road-users that officers are committed to traffic safety enforcement and education year-round. This dedication promotes safe driving habits, making our roads safer for everyone.
