​Ripley Horticultural Society scales back flower show; holds plant sale

The Ripley and District Horticultural Society held a scaled-back Spring Flower Show, Wednesday evening, May 15, at the Ripley-Huron Legion.

There were 11 exhibitors, with 28 entries in seven classes.

Ann Finlayson outlined how to judge the flowers, which ranged from lilacs and tulips to arrangements of native plants, and the special category: The Secret Life of Plants.

The members then walked among the entries and declared the winners. First place went to the specimen that was closest to perfection compared to all the other entries in the class.

No overall winner was declared, as the horticultural society plans to hold a few more mini-competitions and have the points accumulate over the year.

Saturday morning, May 18, the horticultural society welcomed a good crowd to its annual plant sale in Lewis Park, Ripley.

Members assisted customers in selecting plants for their gardens. The “For Our Youth” junior horticultural club also had plants available for sale.

The only thing missing was the muffin and a coffee for $1 – and you got to keep the mug.
