​Huron Shores Hospice hosts palliative care consultant, June 4, in Kincardine

Huron Shores Hospice is hosting a lecture, titled "From Self-Care to Self-Compassion," featuring esteemed palliative care consultant Rami Shami, June 4, from 1-3 p.m., at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine.

This lecture offers an understanding on how to safeguard yourself from “compassion fatigue” and “vicarious trauma.” It will teach ways to help create safe spaces for yourself, when dealing with end-of-life care, and learn how to creatively infuse “resiliency in the field” in end of life.

Participants will examine their role of vulnerability and ritual in the area of compassionate care, and bring awareness to ways to stay healthy in mind and body, and prevent burn-out, or empathetic distress. Discussion will also centre on researched and proven strategies of self-compassion and mindfulness to foster care for yourself so you remain well, while serving in all end-of-life roles.

Shami is the community relations advisor for Lighthouse for Grieving Children, and has been serving within hospice palliative care for more than three decades. He feels privileged to practise as a consultant in hospice palliative care, as well as case manager for the Second Mile Club at Kensington Health.
