The Nicol Insurance Kincardine Junior "C" Bulldogs had their plans foiled on two fronts this past weekend, first by Mother Nature, and then by the Mitchell Hawks.
With severe weather conditions forcing the cancellation of the game Friday night in Kincardine against Walkerton, the 'Dogs were left with only their Saturday night contest against the Hawks in Mitchell as their weekend action.
Mitchell started things early, opening the scoring at the 2:59 mark of the first period, but Kincardine responded quickly when Gerrit Satosek notched the equalizer on the powerplay just over three minutes later, with Shawn Moore and Alex Labrosse drawing the assists.
The Hawks came to play, though, and charged back, to the delight of their hometown crowd, with a pair of goals within a minute of each other, to take a 3-1 lead in the game at the 8:53 mark.
The 'Dogs powerplay clicked again before the end of the period when Matthew Mah hammered home a pass from Brycin Morrison, sending the game to the second period with Kincardine trailing by one.
The second period was all Kincardine, as the 'Dogs lit up the scoreboard with three even-strength goals in the frame. Dalton Hnatko got things rolling with his goal at the 12:50 mark, assisted by Morrison and Luke Czuczman, to make it 3-3. Matt Baker and Morrison then popped another two goals into the Mitchell net just 10 seconds apart, to give the 'Dogs a two-goal lead, heading into the third period. Satosek and Sam Feagan got the helpers on Baker’s goal, while Hnatko was credited with the lone assist on Feagan’s goal.
It is said that a two-goal lead is one of the worst to have in hockey, and Saturday night, the 'Dogs would agree as Mitchell’s Jake Finlayson scored a pair of unanswered goals in the third, thwarting Kincardine’s chance for two points in regulation and sending the game to overtime, which solved nothing and sent both teams off the ice with a single point only.
The Dogs return to the Davidson Centre Friday night, weather permitting, of course, for the first of a home-and-home series against the Walkerton Hawks before heading to Walkerton Saturday night. Game time Friday is 8:30 p.m., so we will see you at the rink!
