​South Bruce OPP report swimmers in distress; stunt-drivers; and road safety week results

POLICE RESPOND TO SWIMMERS IN DISTRESS

(LAKE HURON, ON) - Members of the South Bruce OPP and South Bruce OPP Marine Unit responded to four swimmers reported to be in distress on Canada Day, just off Station Beach, Kincardine.

July 1, at 7:04 p.m., the South Bruce OPP received the report of swimmers yelling for help off the Kincardine shoreline in Lake Huron. Police attended and located the four swimmers who were taken to shore with the assistance of officers and bystanders.

One individual was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The South Bruce OPP wants everyone to have a safe summer on the water. Swimmers are reminded of the following safety tips:
 

• Life jackets. Wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) or have one nearby.
• Check and monitor the Weather Forecast. Conditions can change quickly particularly on larger bodies of water.
• Learn how to swim. It’s never too late and it could save a life!
• Know your ability. Only swim in water deep enough that you can manage.
• Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, in case of an emergency.
• Avoid Alcohol. Avoid alcohol when planning to swim or being near water.

TWO STUNT-DRIVERS CHARGED OVER HOLIDAY WEEKEND

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) - In the height of the Canada Road Safety Campaign, the South Bruce OPP laid two stunt-driving charges.

June 28, at 9:24 p.m., a South Bruce OPP on patrol along Highway 9, in the Municipality of Kincardine, noticed a vehicle moving at a high rate of speed. The vehicle's speed was displayed on radar at 110 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone.

A 52-year-old Brockton resident was charged with Stunt-Driving.

This charge includes an immediate 30-day driver's licence suspension and an immediate 14-day vehicle impoundment.

July 1, at 9:34 p.m., a South Bruce OPP officer on patrol along Highway 86, in the Township of Huron- Kinloss, noticed a vehicle moving at a high rate of speed. The vehicle's speed was displayed on radar at 148 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone.

A 51-year-old Waterloo resident was charged with Stunt-Driving.

This charge includes an immediate 30-day driver's licence suspension and an immediate 14-day vehicle impoundment.

CANADA ROAD SAFETY WEEK RESULTS FOR SOUTH BRUCE OPP
 
(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) - All members of the South Bruce OPP took part in the Canada Road Safety Week campaign that ran from June 21 to July 1. Officers paid close attention to the "Big 4" causal factors in serious collisions on OPP-patrolled roadways: Impaired Driving, Distracted Driving, Aggressive Driving, and Fail to wear a Seatbelt.

South Bruce OPP officers laid 201 traffic-related charges during the week-long initiative including:
 

• 156 speeding
• Two stunt driving
• One impaired driving
• Two distracted driving
• Two seatbelt infractions
• 38 other provincial offence charges

Another 24 Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check points were set up at various South Bruce locations throughout the campaign.

During the campaign, the South Bruce OPP investigated 23 motor vehicle collisions. There were minor injuries reported at two of the collision scenes.

"I'm pleased to see that we had no fatal motor vehicle collisions during this time frame,” says inspector Keegan Wilcox, detachment commander, South Bruce OPP. “However, these results tell us that we have too many drivers continuing to take chances with road safety. The traffic safety initiative has ended, but the South Bruce OPP remains committed to road safety all year long. Motorists on southern Bruce County roads can expect to see our officers stopping drivers who pose a risk to your safety.”
