Thousands gather in Macpherson Park, Kincardine, for Canada Day festivities

Thousands of people filled Macpherson Park, Kincardine, with a flood of red and white, for the Canada Day festivities, Monday afternoon.

The event began with the parade which formed up in Victoria Park, this year, and then marched to Queen Street, down Harbour Street to the flag pole and into the park.

Leading off the parade, were the Kincardine Legion Colour Party, veterans and the Kincardine Air Cadets, followed by the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band, Kincardine Guiding and Scouting, and a couple of decorated vehicles.

Standing on the Boiler Beach band’s mobile stage, MC Mike Walsh welcomed everyone to the celebration of Canada’s 157th birthday.

Kincardine councillor Beth Blackwell gave the land acknowledgement, and mayor Kenneth Craig told the crowd that Canada’s greatest natural resource is its people.

“People come here seeking prosperity for them and their families,” he said. “That’s what we’re celebrating today - people of diverse backgrounds working together, growing together and building together.

“Enjoy the festivities and the fireworks. Happy Canada Day, Kincardine!”

Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb said it was a beautiful day to celebrate Canada, with red and white everywhere throughout the riding. “This is our day, Canada Day. Have a great time here in Kincardine!”

The Kincardine Community Singers, under the direction of Patt Lowry and accompanied by Liz Coates, sang “O Canada,” and there were activities in the park throughout the afternoon, including games, face-painting and balloon animals for the children, the Kincardine Lions barbecue and Sundae Drift.

Canada Day ended with fireworks over Kincardine Harbour at dusk.
