​Kincardine Legion donates $93,000 to local charities

The Kincardine Legion has donated more in one day than it did all last year, thanks to the funds raised in the Catch the Ace progressive lottery.

A crowd gathered in the Legion Hall, Wednesday afternoon (July 24), for the presentation of $93,000 to three local charities: the Kincardine Lions Club, Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey, and the Kincardine Food Bank. Each received a cheque for $31,000.

Legion president Jim McDonald said the money for the Lions Club is for the All-Wheel Park, to be built west of the playground  and Splash Pad at Lions Park, located beside the Davidson Centre in Kincardine.

“This is a huge project but it’s one that is desperately needed,” he said. “The current skate park is almost unusable. A lot of people use the skate park, even coming here from out of town. It would help a lot of youth of all ages.”

Legion first vice-president Teri Leslie said the Legion membership voted overwhelmingly in support of donating to the Women’s House.

“We wanted to choose organizations in which the money would be impactful to the community,” she said. “The Women’s House offers a lot of programs and services, as well as the help line, for women and children in crisis.”

Legion charity chairman Russ Crook said the Kincardine Food Bank is getting busier every year and certainly deserves financial support.

“We support the veterans and the communities where they live,” he said. “For that reason, we are going to partner with the food bank in the future.”

“Thank you to all three organizations for all you do in the entire community,” said McDonald.

The $93,000 donated by the Legion was its share of the Catch the Ace proceeds. The other two-thirds of the funds went to Huron Shores Hospice and the Tiverton and District Lions Club.

Tickets for the next round of Catch the Ace go on sale Wednesday, July 31, and the first draw will be Aug. 7.
