​Inverhuron man celebrates 90th birthday on the golf course

Four generations of Ron McGibney’s family gathered at Somerhill Golf Club, Sunday morning, to celebrate his 90th birthday.

This was the second day of festivities, as family and friends enjoyed dinner at the Kincardine Legion, Saturday night.

Born Sept. 22, 1934, in Dublin, Ireland, Ron is the son of Thomas and Margaret (nee Soye).

He met his future wife, Catherine (Kay), at the Irish church dance hall on Sunday nights, listening to great bands, and ballroom dancing. They were married Feb. 15, 1958.

Three of their children, Paul, Clare and Steve, were born in Ireland. Margaret followed four years later in Canada. They have eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Ron and Kay emigrated from Ireland to Canada in 1965, arriving in Scarborough.

They moved to Bruce County that same year and stayed with Minnie and Howard Campbell for a short time where they spent a lot of the summers on the beach in Inverhuron.

Following a move to London and then Oshawa, they returned to Inverhuron, and he retired from Ontario Hydro in the early 1990s.

Ron spends a lot of his time golfing in the warmer weather, and he swims year-round. He has been a member of Somerhill Golf Club for 35 years, since the course opened.
