​Bruce Power, suppliers donate $100,000 to Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario

Bruce Power and its supplier partners continue to support those impacted by childhood cancer by combining to donate $100,000 to the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO).

With pediatric childhood cancer types on the rise and not well understood, the Bruce Power and supplier donations enable POGO to continue to build the best childhood cancer research and care systems for impacted youth and their families. POGO programs include financial assistance for families in need, transitions counselling and much-needed continued research in the field.

“Through the generous commitment of Bruce Power and its supplier partners, we are making a meaningful difference in the childhood cancer community,” said Shannon Caskey, chief development officer of POGO. “Their investment enables us to extend our reach, innovate, and drive programs and services that benefit patients, survivors, families, and health-care professionals throughout Ontario.”

Bruce Power and its employees are also proud of their role as a global supplier of medical isotopes, which are used in various forms of cancer treatment and the sterilization of medical equipment.

For decades, Bruce Power’s reactors have been producing Cobalt-60, an isotope which helps to sterilize 40 per cent of the world’s medical devices, battle cancer and treat brain tumours. In 2022, Bruce Power expanded into the production of Lutetium-177, an isotope used to treat neuroendocrine tumours and prostate cancer.

This was made possible through the installation of an innovative Isotope Production System (IPS), which also has the capability of producing other cancer-fighting medical isotopes. A second IPS will be added to Bruce Power’s Unit 7 this fall, doubling the amount of Lutetium-177 Bruce Power supplies to the world’s health-care sector.

Bruce Power’s merchandise website celebrates the cancer-fighting medical isotopes produced in its reactors, with proceeds being shared between POGO and the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.
