October is Canadian Library Month

In October, celebrate Canadian Library Month and Ontario Public Library Week with the Bruce County Public Library.

Library Week runs Oct. 20-26, and this year’s theme is “Libraries for Life.”

The public library will showcase services and products it offers that support different ages and stages of development. It will also host local authors all month long at various branches throughout Bruce County.

Friday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m., community members are invited to hear local author Cindy Matthews read from her second book of short stories, “The Roach Family and Other Stories,” at the Chesley branch.

Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m., the Walkerton branch will host a special author event with Michelle Unsworth-Foote, to discuss her book “How to Get Your Sh*t Together (so your loved ones don’t have to do it for you).” Register at the Walkerton branch in advance to attend this event.

The public library will close out the month by showcasing local talent with the return of its popular “Read Local” event, taking place Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at the Kincardine branch. This is your chance to meet and connect with six talented local authors and find your next hidden gem among their many titles.

The library is also shining a light on the many non-traditional items and on-line resources it offers that help support the different ages and stages of development. Throughout the week of Oct. 20, it will highlight the social media channels for different age groups and the supports available to them, covering everyone from birth to seniors.

Some things you can expect to learn about are the “Me, You and a Book Too” bags for newborns and “Be Active Sports Kits,” “Tech Kits” and on-line services, such as Mango Languages and World Book, for school-age kids.

For families and adults, you can borrow park and museum passes and fishing rods, or stream thousands of TV shows and movies with Kanopy.

Seniors and their care partners can access Memory Kits and useful resources, such as the Canadian Reference Centre. These hardly scratch the surface of what is available with your library card.

“As we celebrate Canadian Library Month and Ontario Public Library Week, we are proud to highlight the ever-growing range of resources that extend beyond traditional library items,” said library director Brooke McLean. “We invite the community to visit one of our 17 branches throughout Bruce County or make your way to a Bookmobile stop to learn how much the public library has to offer.”
