Canadian-made products are next innovative generation in gummy products

Our busy day can be challenging at times. Hectic schedules may lead to feeling overworked and exhausted. These factors are the foundation behind the “steady-as-it-goes” approach for SE Steady
TM Gummy Bars, the next innovative generation in gummy products.
SE Gummy Bars was conceived six years ago, by
Michael Holder (right), founder of Smith Enniskillen. He recalled a topic of interest from his time working as an ESL teacher in China, and decided to revisit it.
"Living and working in China introduced me to a different culture and allowed me to see the positive view of Canadian-made products from an international perspective.”
The concept for SE Gummy Bars is based on the Yin-Yang Chinese philosophy of a perfect balance and harmony. Our daily life journey is created from passive and active lifecycles, ranging from the hustle and bustle of work and family to relaxation and inner peace. These patterns of change can form the character of individuals and influence our lifestyles.
The innovative idea behind SE Gummy Bars was to combine gummy bears with beneficial ingredients into a single sliceable/chewable compact gummy bar for a positive social benefit.
The founding product is SE Steady
TM, with Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid Hydrochloride (GABA HCl), a mild naturally-occurring calming relaxant.
“We can all think of times in our daily lives when some calming influence can be applied.” This is the consumer demand for which SE Steady
TM Gummy Bars was originally created. Made in Canada, this new category of consumer product is locally-produced by Holder’s company, Smith Enniskillen Company Limited.
Starting in September, 2018, Holder used his chemistry background to develop a sustainable and environmentally-friendly chemical synthesis process to produce selected beneficial ingredients from amino acid nutrients.
“This worked particularly well for producing GABA HCl which is a mild naturally-occurring calming relaxant, hence the ‘steady-as-it-goes’” concept,” he says.
While developing the chemical synthesis process, he also utilized his stationary engineering background to design and build a small production facility, specifically to manufacture GABA HCl and the formulated gummy bar.
At the same time, Holder developed the Gummy Bar formulation, as a method for delivering significant amounts of useful beneficial ingredients. The final product resulted in a Gummy Bar with a strawberry flavour, free of gluten, fats, sugars, sodium and carbohydrates, while being low in calories and high in proteins.
The Gummy Bar can be chewed and/or cut like a gummy bear. The package is compact and portable, and can be carried with you in your pocket or purse, throughout your day.
With the successful development of both the chemical synthesis process and gummy bar formulation, the work and perseverance resulted in a huge milestone for Holder in 2022, when he received his official Patents for the SE Gummy Bar from the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) – CA 3132224, and CA 3153977.
“My product has exclusive protection via two patents, for the length of the patent lifetime.” It’s the same strategy that pharmaceutical companies use when they develop new commercial products.
“Incredibly, according to CIPO, only 2,027 patents were granted to Canadians in 2021-22, two of which were for my product, so that is a significant accomplishment.”
His company, Smith Enniskillen, is an all-Canadian integrated manufacturing operation, which includes production of the beneficial ingredient GABA HCl; formulation, packaging and labelling of the finished Gummy Bar product; ownership and operation of separate company and product retail store websites; and creation and ownership of intellectual property, such as the patents, trademarks and “lifestyle” marketing campaigns.
Holder is a university and college graduate, with Bachelor and Honours Bachelors of Science degrees, specializing in Biochemistry and Organic Synthesis from Trent University, and a Bachelor of Education degree from Nipissing University. He also holds an Advanced College Diploma in Chemical Production and Power Engineering Technology from Lambton College.
He welcomes all adults looking to add some “steady-as-it-goes” to their busy day. His on-line retail store website, for direct consumer sales, can be visited at
