Huge crowd greeted by cold, rainy weather at Kincardine Remembrance Day ceremony

Despite the wet, windy weather, hundreds of people turned out for the annual Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Kincardine Legion Cenotaph, Monday morning.

Inside, the Legion hall was mostly full for the Remembrance Day service at 10 a.m.

Rev. Judy Zarubick led the service, with Liz Dadson as pianist. Legion past-president Robert Fletcher and president Jim McDonald read the Scripture, and everyone joined in singing the hymns.

Zarubick said this is a time to pause and remember those Canadians who fought in the wars for us, and those who continue to serve.

“Those who died, who served, they made the world a safer place to live,” she said. “They died for Canada. Our future is there monument.

“We enjoy freedom because those soldiers fought for it, and continue to fight for it. Without freedom, there is no enduring peace, and without peace, there is no enduring freedom.

“They believed in a future of peace and fought for it. Now, it’s up to us to ensure their dreams of peace are realized.

“By wearing a poppy and sharing a minute or two of silence, that’s how we acknowledge the many who suffered. It’s why we must work for peace each and every of the year.”

Outside the Legion, Robert Grey led the ceremony, with the Colour Party forming up beside the Cenotaph, as well as the Kincardine Air Cadets, and two Cadets standing as the Honour Guard.

"O Canada" was played, followed by "The Last Post" played by bugler Ray Kester, "The Lament" by piper Jennifer Farrell of the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band, two minutes of silence, and then "Reveille" by Kester.

A plethora of wreaths was placed, and the ceremony ended with the singing of "God Save the King."

Everyone was invited inside the Legion to warm up with coffee and hot chocolate, followed by lunch.
