Margaret Visser wins “Top 10 Stories Over the Past 10 Years” contest
Margaret Visser of Huron-Kinloss Township has won the Kincardine Record’s “Top 10 Stories Over the Past 10 Years” contest. Her list of the top stories includes the following:
July 1, 2015 - The Kincardine Lions Club opened the splash pad beside the Davidson Centre. This splash pad has now been enjoyed by so many children for almost 10 years.
Aug. 21, 2015 - The tall ships, Playfair and Pathfinder, arrive in Kincardine. The weather was bright and sunny and the waves were big due to a high wind. It was a wonderful arrival with the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band performing on the pier and Graham Mahood and Peter Humble dressed in period costume.
April 21, 2016 - The Kincardine Community Medical Clinic was renamed the Hawthorne Community Clinic in honour of Duncan Hawthorne, at his retirement event at the Ripley-Huron Community Centre. Hawthorne retired from Bruce Power after 15 years as president and chief executive officer.
July 1, 2017 - Paul Henderson visited Kincardine on Canada Day. He was born in Kincardine. The Canada 150 committee arranged for his visit and for Henderson to unveil a plaque which was erected at the hospital. The plaque has now been moved to the Davidson Centre.
March 23, 2020 - Bruce County warden Mitch Twolan officially declared a state of emergency in response to COVID-19. This was one of the first warnings that the COVID-19 pandemic was happening and spreading quickly. The Kincardine Record kept readers updated on the number of cases and other important information from the Grey Bruce Health Unit.
Jan. 23, 2022 - There was a fire at the Sutton Park Inn. The north half of the wing of rooms was engulfed in smoke and flames. Damage was estimated at between $1-million and $2-million. This was the second fire at the Sutton Park Inn in less than a year. The first fire, with estimated damages of $2 million, was on May 26, 2021.
June 26, 2022 - Tonight was the first Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band Saturday Night Parade after COVID-19. For the past two years, the pipe band did not hold its Saturday night parades along Queen Street. The event tonight had a mammoth crowd and loud cheering for the pipe band.
July 10, 2023 – Kincardine council discussed the Secord Monument and agreed there needed to be a decision about whether to return it to its former location in front of the Kincardine Library. This was the beginning of a series of discussions regarding the monument which was taken down during the reconstruction of Queen Street in the summer of 2023.
Aug. 12, 2023 - A man from the Waterloo Region drowned at the pier in Kincardine. Concerns about drownings at the piers and the beach prompted Kincardine council to set up an ad hoc committee to examine safety at the piers.
Aug. 15, 2024 – Kincardine councillor Doug Kennedy died after a lengthy battle with cancer. Kennedy was a well-known and respected volunteer in the community, coaching sports, particularly hockey. In 2023, the Kincardine Record reported him being awarded the Ontario Hockey Association’s Gold Stick Award for 50 years of outstanding service to hockey in Kincardine.
Visser has won a $100 gift card to a local business, as well as a finely-crafted Kincardine Record hat and pen.
