Sharon Cox of Kincardine remembered for her outgoing personality and dedication to community
Sharon Lilian Cox (née Spalding) of Kincardine, died at Trillium Court Seniors’ Community, Jan. 1, 2025, at the age of 85.
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Sept. 13, 1939, she was the daughter of late Jack Kilburn Spalding and Eleanor Mabel Spalding (née Goostrey). Predeceased by her son, Paul Douglas Cox; brothers-in-law, Ray Rathwell and Cliff Gussie; and parents-in-law, Roxanna and Bill Cox.
Sharon’s family moved to Swan River, Manitoba, in 1952, where she met and married Lee Cox, her husband of 64 years.
She became a teacher, first teaching in Swan River, Manitoba. As Sharon and Lee started their family, she took a break from teaching to concentrate on her growing family, which included fostering children, along with raising their own. Having moved to Kirkland Lake during this time, she later returned to teaching with a focus on special needs children and later, English as a second language.
Sharon was a dedicated member of the Eastern Star, serving in many offices, as well as being appointed Grand Esther in 1998-99. She served with the United Church Women (UCW). These ventures are where she flourished with her outgoing personality and dedication to ensuring that no one should ever be left out.
Once the kids were grown, Sharon and Lee moved to Kincardine where they enjoyed round and square dancing with their friends, Dan and Rhetha Roy. She loved cross-country skiing. She was fond of being a caregiver to children and opening their home to those in need. She spent time visiting church members in hospital and in long-term care.
Loving mother of Jon Cox (Maureen Denford-Cox) of Thunder Bay, Steve Cox (Christina Deighton) of Kirkland Lake, Alan Cox (Lisa Cox - née Cameron) of Kanata, and Sharilee Cox-Arseneault (Chuck Arseneault) of Milton.
Dearly missed by her eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: Cassandra Weidner (Zachary) and their children, Everet and Lillian - daughter of Jon Cox; Ashton Cox (Janelle Jacques) and their son, Gunnar, Ryleigh Cox (Stephanie Aitchison) – sons of Steve Cox; Rebecca Moussette (Taylor) and their daughters, Maeve and Rory, Paul Cameron Cox, Katelyn Cox (Damian Richards) - children of Alan Cox; Zachary Hoehle (Sascha Scherba), Madison Arseneault - children of Sharilee Cox-Arseneault
Sharon is also survived by her sister, Norie Rathwell; brother, Wes Spalding; sister-in-law, Kay Gussie; and brother-in-law, Jim Cox (Joan); as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins.
The Cox family thanks the many staff members at Trillium Court, with a special mention to Jessica Haldenby RPN and Sueme Forrester RN, whose kind and compassionate care has meant so much over the past year.
