South Bruce OPP warn residents about cryptocurrency investment scams
(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) - The South Bruce OPP is warning residents about cryptocurrency investment frauds after local incidents over the past few months.
Since October, 2024, the South Bruce OPP has received several reports of residents falling victim to scams involving cryptocurrency, amounting to more than $190,000 in lost funds.
The majority of investment scam reports involve residents deciding to invest in cryptocurrency after seeing deceptive advertisements through social media platforms. Victims funnel their money through illegitimate cryptocurrency investment firms, and then, are unable to retrieve their money.
The South Bruce OPP is urging residents to be very cautious with these types of investments. Do your research into the various investment firms before sending any money, and consider speaking with your financial institution or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to avoid falling victim to this increasing trend we have been seeing.
The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit a secure web-tip at
www.cstip.ca, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
