Reader urges residents to see sports dome as a positive step forward for Huron-Kinloss
To the Editor:

I am writing in strong support of the proposed Indoor Sports Dome at the Kin-Bruce Park in Huron-Kinloss Township.

As detailed in my recent research on Kincardine and Saugeen Shores, community attitudes regarding development often lean toward NIMBYism (Not In My Back Yard) - a resistance to change, even when it brings clear benefits. This project is a prime example of how development can enhance the quality of life rather than detract from it.

The $6-million facility will provide much-needed, year-round sports access, with overwhelming demand from local organizations already secured. It revitalizes under-utilized park space without a taxpayer burden, thanks to a public-private partnership. Additionally, it will strengthen community bonds and attract visitors, boosting local businesses.

Growth is inevitable in our region, and we must shape it wisely. The Sports Dome project is a responsible investment that meets recreational needs, supports sustainable development, and fosters a more inclusive, active community. I urge residents to see this as a positive step forward, not an intrusion.

Sincerely,
Hilary Holmes
Kincardine

Sports Dome. I agree with Hilary Homes support of the proposed indoor sports dome and wise thoughts on growth and development. Our community needs to encourage reasonable and measured growth. We need an economic development plan that promotes new businesses instead of turning them away with unreasonable development charges etc…. In the Municipality of Kincardine we could have had a Walmart that would have created significant employment and brought in people from surrounding areas who would support and create other businesses. Several years ago we had five gas stations, now we have two. We had three grocery stores now we have two. We used to have at least three car dealerships now we have two. We need to support some growth in our community or we will continue to wither on the vine. Socio-economic unrest will only get worse if there are no employment opportunities for those not fortunate enough to work at Bruce Power. The only growth we seem to have these days is with Municipal staff who are paid by the tax payers. For those taxpayers who don’t support commercial growth, I grew up in Hamilton Ontario where back in the 70 ‘s the tax base was 70% industrial/commercial and 30% residential. It is now 70% residential and 30% industrial/commercial. This was due in part to the loss of their industrial/commercial base. So when we complain about our tax increases and lack of amenities please keep this in mind. Neil Geoghegan Kincardine

How easy it is for someone to support a project that is not in their BACKYARD. I fail to see how turning a quiet park into a commercial enterprise is good for the neighbors of the area. Neither Ms Holmes or Mr Geoghegan will have this project placed within a few hundred feet of their homes, but demonize those that will be affected by the project. Currently I am not sure about the attitudes of the residents who live within the immediate area ( backyards) but I am sure there is land available that will have less impact upon property owners elsewhere.
