Kincardine Women's Triathlon registration sold out in 41 minutes

The 2016 Kincardine Women's Triathlon doesn't take place until July, but has already set a new record.

Registration opened New Year's Day at 10 a.m., and all 450 spots were sold out in 41 minutes. Last year, registration was sold out in 56 minutes.

Race director Kim Westbrook, who has taken over from Melanie Fisher, was amazed at how quickly the race sold out.

"In 2011, it took five weeks before the race was full," she said. "That was the year Melanie Fisher took over as race director. Thanks to her and the team, this year's race sold out in just 41 minutes - a new record!

"I have a challenge ahead of me to keep the popularity and enthusiasm of this race going. I’m not planning to make any major changes to the event this year - I’d like to get through my first race and then look at possible changes or expansion.

"It’s going to be an awesome race this year and I’m looking forward it!"

The 16th annual event is slated to run Saturday, July 9, at 9 a.m., at Station Beach, Kincardine.

The triathlon includes a 350-metre swim, a 12-kilometre bike ride, and a three-kilometre run. Athletes can also compete in the duathlon which is a three-kilometre run, followed by a 12-kilometre bike ride, and another three-kilometre run.

Katie Peach of Oakville, a cottager at Point Clark, won the 2015 Kincardine Women's Triathlon, followed by Glenna Fraumeni of Toronto and Tina Perilli of Brantford. Lisa Wardell of Chatsworth won the duathlon, followed by Jessica Doerr of Kincardine and Kim Taylor of Walkerton.
