Winter doesn't wait for you to be ready - get that emergency kit stocked

Bruce County has already experienced significant snow and winter weather this season. And if history has taught us anything, it's that the next storm isn't a matter of if — it's when.

Heavy snow and ice storms don't just create pretty winter scenes, they can snap power lines and leave you in the dark.

Is your emergency kit stocked with what you and your family may need?

It’s important to refresh your emergency kit for winter with items that will keep you safe, warm and calm while the storm passes for a minimum of 72 hours, keeping in mind it could be even longer in some situations. 

"Extra consideration should be taken for your home emergency kit during the winter months," says Ray Lux, the county’s emergency management co-ordinator. "Power outages can have more implications with cold weather. Make sure your kit has the supplies to help keep you safe and warm in the event of a power failure during a winter storm."

Your winter emergency kit should include:
 

• Cold-weather gear for indoor use – warm blankets, thermal blankets, wool socks, extra mitts and hats
• Flashlights with fresh batteries – rather than using your phone as a flashlight, reserve its power and use a flashlight; darkness comes early in winter
• Non-perishable food and water – essential year-round, but critical when you can't cook or access clean water
• A back-up generator – ideal for maintaining lights and heat during outages in Bruce County
• A designated warm room – if a generator isn't possible, choose one room you can seal off to trap heat; keep those doors closed
