​Bruce County Museum invites public to be part of quilt project honouring Black History Month

The Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre is marking Black History Month with a special community art initiative led by renowned artist, author and President’s Poet, Nadine Williams.

Taking place Feb. 28, this interactive experience invites community members to participate in a meaningful collaborative quilt project honouring the International Decade for People of African Descent, a United Nations initiative recognizing the contributions, histories and rights of people of African descent worldwide.

Participants will help shape the creative direction of a large community quilt by exploring their own experiences and developing an individual 8.5-inch-by-11-inch art tile representing “the fabric of your being.” The activity provides participants with all materials, and there is no requirement for prior art experience. Participants may also contribute ideas for a tile if they prefer not to create one visually. The Nadine Williams Collective will design and stitch together the completed pieces to form a unified quilt.

Through this hands-on workshop, participants will gain an introductory understanding of the decade and its themes, while also engaging with Williams’ ongoing work, including her poem, "The Fabric of Our Being." The program encourages reflection on identity, heritage, and the personal stories that shape who we are.

Unveiling of the completed quilt is set for Aug. 2, and it will become a permanent installation at the museum, symbolizing diversity, inclusion and shared community pride. An announcement with more details is coming soon.

This inclusive program is open to participants, aged eight and older. An adult must accompany children aged 12 and under wishing to participate, and all attendees must pre-register. The workshop is free to the public, but there are space limitations, so register early to reserve your spot.
