Off the Broom - Another bonspiel, another blizzard!
Another bonspiel, another blizzard! The annual mixed spiel, held Feb. 7, was again a bit of a hold your breath and hope. The previous night had closed roads and lots of snow but by morning, the weather had cleared enough that all 16 teams arrived, ready to go.
In the early draw, the team of Bill Collins, Susan Varga, and Dave and Brenda Cooper took first place. Second in line, were Eric Gravel, Heather Struthers, Greg Tuskovich and Kim Rankin. The remaining teams were headed up by Steve Kennedy, Brian MacEachern, Mike Kobayashi, Shelley Dechene, Pat Pringle and Matt Beemer.
The late draw winners were Brian and Ollie Regier and Mike and Becky Fair. Brian was a repeat winner from last year. Skips Chris Turcotte, Gerard Lang, Cathy Alcombrack, Dan Norman, Kevin Brown, Craig Urie and Team Avis rounded out that draw. While most of the teams were from our own club, we would like to say how much we appreciate the out-of-towners who come, often in bad weather, to help support us and fill our bonspiels.

The third and final draws of the year are under way. It is hard to believe in a few short weeks our season will be over. Fridays at 6:30 p.m., we always welcome anyone who would like to give the game a try or to get another game under your belt. With the Olympic curling shown on television, many people now will be interested in seeing what curling is all about. More curling coming up with the Brier starting this week — in case you didn’t get your fill with the Olympics!
The regular season of the Framatome Grey Bruce Minor League of Curling is over and now all three Kincardine junior teams — Hunter, Court and Devine — have advanced to the semi-finals/finals in Allenford, March 7. Best of luck to the Kincardine kids. Many thanks to Framatome and the Kincardine Legion for their sponsorship and to Peter Newton for co-ordinating and coaching this group of young curlers.
