Kincardine Legion Corner
Wow, what a week! Since our launch last Wednesday, the new Kin Cares 50/50 Draw, a partnership between the Kincardine Legion and the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation, has continued to climb steadily. As of this writing, the jackpot is approaching $8,000. Today (Friday, April 10), marks our first Early Bird Draw, with a $500 cash prize to be drawn. We will go live with the draw at 4 p.m. from the Legion club room, and invite everyone to join us for this early bird kick-off celebration. Be sure to purchase your tickets before 3:45 p.m. Friday, to be sure you are in the Early Bird Draw. Your monthly tickets put you in for all the Early Birds (after your purchase) as well as the month-end Jackpot Draw.

At the Saturday Meat Draw the double-dippers were Charlie Samms, Scott Allen and Shannon Allen, who all won twice. Ross Dodman took home $178 in the 50/50 draw, and he also won a meat prize. Remember, there is a Meat Draw every Saturday, so come on out and try to win some prizes.

Vimy Ridge Day was Thursday, April 9, and our Legion Colour Guard held a commemoration ceremony at the Kincardine Cemetery, where they placed flags at half-mast in honour of this historic day and the Canadians who sacrificed for us. Photos of the event are below, and you can also watch a video of the ceremony on our Facebook page. Just before things started, the temperature dropped from 12 degrees Celsius to eight degrees Celsius, and the sideways wind brought in the rain. We thank those who attended or watched on-line, as well as our Legion Colour Guard including Sergeant-At-Arms Kirk Rutledge, Mike Dupuis, John Farrell, Nicole Chessell, Sandra Benbow, and Dave Dechene. We also thank Rev. Eric Williams who spoke and offered some thoughtful words and prayers.

Branch 183 members, please mark Sunday, April 19 on your calendars. At the General Membership Meeting at 2 p.m., we will have Branch Elections. In order to vote, your membership must be paid and up-to-date. You can find the list of members who have put their names forward for the Branch Executive on the board in the front hall. Those interested in running for a position are welcome to add their names to the board.

Check the list below for all of our upcoming April and May happenings, but I will point out a few new ones here. Friday, May 1, from 7-10 p.m., we are planning our first-ever Branch 183 Music Bingo Night. Here’s the deal: A book of five games (two cards per game) is just $10. We play clips of songs. If it’s on your card, mark it off. Get your lines, shout BINGO, win prizes. Each game is a different vibe. Think throwback hits, country, Motown, sing-at-the-top-of-your-lungs classics. And yes … singing and dancing are highly encouraged. Bring your friends. Bring your best voice. Or just come for the laughs. This is our first one, and if you’ve never tried Music Bingo, this is your night to start. Let’s pack the Legion for this one!

Also in May, we are hosting a Cornhole Tournament at the Branch, and it’s going to be a-maize-ing! It’s happening Saturday, May 23, from 1-6 p.m., and the cost is $50 per team of two, with a guarantee of at least three games. All skill levels are welcome, and there will be a 50/50 draw as well. To register your team, send an E-mail message to kincardinelegionevents@gmail.com or text 226-930-1114. Did you know, cornhole was actually invented by a group of scientists trying to answer an important question: How far can a bag of corn be thrown after three beers? After extensive research, they concluded … pretty far.
