Bruce County sets community-readiness funding deal with Bruce Power to prepare for Bruce "C"

Thursday (May 21), Bruce County and Bruce Power executed a four-year, $2-million capacity funding agreement, to support regional infrastructure planning and community readiness assessments for the proposed Bruce "C" project.

This agreement positions the county and its municipal partners to better understand and plan for the project’s potential impacts. It will also ensure communities are prepared for future associated growth.

The funding agreement will support the county in assessing key areas, such as transportation, housing, land-use planning, and social infrastructure. This work will identify anticipated capital and service impacts. It will also inform infrastructure and service requirements for the proposed project.

This agreement follows the Province of Ontario’s May 7, announcement to help progress Canada’s first large-scale nuclear build in 30 years. This commitment will fund pre-development activities, including a commitment to community readiness assessments.

The opportunity and responsibility that come with the scale of the proposed Bruce 'C' project require partnership and support,” said warden Luke Charbonneau. “Ontario’s recent commitment to advancing reliable, affordable energy production, along with Bruce Power’s support, will ensure we’re meeting the needs of our residents. We have a lot of critical work to do. This funding, as well as our partnerships, will help us get efforts under way to strengthen our communities as our region helps to power Ontario’s future.”

Over the next four years, the county will proceed with pre-development activities in collaboration with Bruce Power and local municipal partners. Through this co-ordinated approach, the county and its partners will collectively plan for growth. The importance of co-ordinated planning and investment across the region will help ensure the everyone is able to maximize associated economic and social benefits together.

"The Bruce 'C' project represents a significant opportunity for the Clean Energy Frontier region," said Eric Chassard, president and chief executive officer of Bruce Power. "In order to maximize these major benefits, it is essential that local communities have the capacity to advance community and infrastructure readiness assessments.

We know that supportive infrastructure is more than roads and warehouses, it includes housing, workforce services, community planning, and healthy communities with the local capacity to make informed and timely decisions. This agreement ensures that Bruce County has the tools and resources needed to prepare in a thoughtful and responsible way.”

May 14, the Municipality of Kincardine announced a four-year, $2.2-million agreement with Bruce Power for Infrastructure and community readiness. There is expectation that a similar announcement from the Town of Saugeen Shores will follow its May 25 council meeting.

The Bruce "C" project is currently in the Impact Statement phase of the integrated federal Impact Assessment process. Local community information sessions are currently under way throughout May and June. Date and location information is available at engage.brucepower.com/brucec/events.
