Can we not open the Pearly Gates for motorists in emergency situations, asks reader

Can we not open the Pearly Gates for motorists in emergency situations, asks reader

Okay, time for a road condition rant.

I went to Kincardine last night (Friday, Feb. 12) from Tiverton, at 5 p.m. when it was still light out and the roads weren't that bad. This was a much-needed trip as I was going to Shoppers for medication.

It was blowing snow but there were bare patches. Realizing the poor weather conditions were going to continue for the next few days, I decided to pick up groceries I needed. At about 6:30 p.m. after the drug store, Sobeys and gas station, I headed home on the B-line (Bruce County Road 23).

What a white-knuckle trip that was. While there were many white-outs, some idiot driver following me so close he could read my dashboard, decided to pass, kicking up so much snow I had to come to a stop. But the worst was yet to come.

At the "S" turn, all hell broke loose. The white-outs were unbearable. Turning around wouldn't help since it was as bad back there. Many times I had to come to a full stop and I was driving with my four-way flashers on. Vehicles coming from Tiverton also had their four-way flashers on, so I knew I was in for more. There was even a van in the ditch and the vehicle behind me was the one going to rescue it.

Once I got to the top of the Inverhuron hill going down to the lake, the weather was soooo much better. When I got home, I heard the B-line had been closed right behind me, from Lorne Beach Road to Bruce County Road 15. What would I have done if I had left town a few minutes later? I would have been stuck in town in a hotel since I really don't know many people in Kincardine who would bunk me. Now I know why they have the big hotels here.

My point is, for people living in Inverhuron who find themselves in this situation couldn't we open the famous "Pearly Gates" for these emergencies? Don't get me wrong, I love that Inverhuron is a nice quiet place where the roads are safe, but we need to look at these emergency situations.
