Bervie W.I. discusses voices of women in agriculture

The Bervie Women’s Institute met at the Bervie United Church, Wednesday morning, with the theme, "International Year of the Woman Farmer."

President Bev Berndt opened the meeting with the usual openings and the land acknowledgement. Ten members answered the Roll Call which was: “Name a woman farmer that you know or know of." Many members referred to their own mothers or friends who worked tirelessly with their spouses on the family farm. Several members also were woman farmers working alongside their husbands on their own farms.

Betty Jean White read the minutes of the last meeting and Islay Eby gave the treasurer’s report. Sandra MacDonald presented the Sunshine Report. Newly-elected Bruce County W.I.  District president Betty Anne Thompson provided a report on the District Annual held last week in Ripley, with the theme being “Voices of Women In Agriculture”. The highlight of the afternoon was a panel of Jennifer Bryson, Kayla Lowry and Janice Needham who are all women in agriculture, operating or assisting with their own farming operations. Serena Harris was the moderator.

Betty Anne and Sandra will co-ordinate the W.I. display at the International Plowing Match being held near Walkerton in September. Volunteers are needed and also for the Quilt Tent.

Convener Betty Jean then presented some interesting facts about how women are involved in agriculture not only in Canada but all over the world. Many in foreign countries contribute to the world food supply where there is often famine. Thanks to Betty Jean for her presentation and the tasty snacks.

The meeting closed with the closing ode and the singing of “God Save the King."

The next meeting will be at Stone Bridge Flour Mill near Ripley, July 8, at 11 a.m. Meet at the Bervie United Church at 10 a.m. for a short meeting first.
