RE: "Can we not open the Pearly Gates for motorists in emergency situations, asks reader"
That letter is so true. Years ago, I found myself in the same situation.
But to those who live along the road that would be opened maybe once or twice a year, the rest of us are the great unwashed.
They don’t care what is going on as long as their precious road remains closed. Extremely selfish of them.

RE: "Can we not open the Pearly Gates for motorists in emergency situations, asks reader"
That has been a question asked over and over again. Why were the gates put there in the first place?
We live in Bruce County where each and every winter, the roads are closed at least once. I, too, believe the gates should be open.
Would the gates be open if an ambulance needed to get through or what if it was a life or death situation and the ambulance had to sit and wait to get through until the gates were open?
Who opens the gates?
This is an issue that needs to be addressed. For the few instances a year, it needs to be accessible.
I am sure the residents who live down there would not be opposed to it being open so people could get home safely or, in a worst case scenario, a person's life could be saved because emergency vehicles could get through. We all know a few seconds could be the difference between life and death.
Open the pearly gates during bad weather!
