The Huron United Football Club got back into the win column, June 30, with a complete performance in the sweltering heat, earning a 2-0 victory in the Tri-City Men's Soccer League match-up against Stratford City.
It was clear that the players were acclimating to the effects of the 30-degree-Celsius-plus humidity in the early going, with both teams looking to establish controlled possession rather than seeking out long balls.
Co-captain Gerrit Satosek created Huron United's first chances of the match through his relentless effort in loose ball battles on the wings, testing the Stratford keeper with multiple in-swinging crosses. Facing several key absences on the back-line, manager Anirudha Panditrao assembled a makeshift centre-back pairing of Jason Leiskau and Simon Andonian, and the veteran players' composure left neutral observers convinced that they were playing their natural positions.
Winger Drew Cobean identified a point of weakness in Stratford's defensive structure, and supplied multiple opportunities for Huron United with dangerous dribbles into the left side of Stratford's 18-yard box. Another Huron United chance came off an interception by co-captain Jacob Hunsburger, who laid a ball into the path of Adam Carty’s powerful left foot, but the Stratford keeper’s diving save chaperoned the ball just over the bar.
After this flurry of chances, in the end Huron United's breakthrough came off a Stratford corner: careful marking allowed Huron United to clear the ball from the defensive set piece, and attacker James Jeffreys launched into an all-out attack on the bouncing ball at mid-field. Jeffreys out-worked the Stratford defender, claimed possession, and settled the ball before depositing it into the Stratford net, putting Huron United ahead in the 33rd minute. Satosek nearly doubled the lead minutes later, with a blasted volley off a clever pass from mid-fielder Matt Brown that forced another leaping save from the Stratford keeper.
Huron United opened the second half with a purpose, driving pressure toward the Stratford net right from kick-off. The home squad was rewarded in the 53rd minute when Flynn Colwell-Castles’ corner precipitated a scramble in the Stratford box, which Satosek cleaned up to pull Huron United ahead by two.
Huron United keeper Josh Coleman and his back-line commanded the defensive half for the balance of the game, thwarting most Stratford attacks before they could fully blossom. Huron United's defensive work rate and thoughtful outlet-passing preserved the clean sheet for Coleman and sealed the 2-0 victory.
Man of the Match honours went to Satosek, with honourable mentions going to Leiskau, Andrew Wiegersma, and Dylan Simon for their outstanding efforts in the victory.
Huron United is playing out of the Tri-City Men's Soccer League again this season, and the next match was set for Tuesday, July 7, against Riverside FC B at Spinrite Field, Listowel. Huron United’s roster is composed of players from Kincardine, Port Elgin, and surrounding areas, and the team is playing under the Saugeen Shores United Football Club.
