It was a hot, hazy afternoon in Kincardine as a small crowd gathered for the official unveiling of the Remembrance Crosswalk, located on the west side of the intersection of Lambton Street and Huron Terrace, beside the Kincardine Legion.
Sergeant-at-arms Kirk Rutledge called to order the Colour Party, consisting of Kevin Martin, Mike Dupuis, Nicole Chessell, Andrew MacKinnon, Sandra Benbow and John Farrell, which stood on either side of the new crosswalk during the ceremony.
Legion chaplain Rev. Eric Williams welcomed everyone and said unveiling the crosswalk was the perfect way to remember and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion.
He said the crosswalk was dedicated in memory of those who sacrificed their lives so we may live in freedom and peace.
Legion president Teri Leslie said this was a great day to dedicate the crosswalk and thanked the Municipality of Kincardine for working with the Legion on this project.
Pat O'Connor, representing Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb's office, said this memorial crosswalk preserves the memory of the many veterans who served, and those who continue to serve. And he commended the Kincardine Legion for its ongoing service to veterans and the community.
Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson echoed those sentiments, saying the crosswalk recognizes all the service men and women across Canada and around the world, as well as the many Legion volunteers who serve here at home.
"What better way to mark the 100th anniversary of the Legion than with this wonderful tribute in Kincardine," she said. "This crosswalk will serve as a reminder every day of those who served and continue to serve. The Kincardine Legion continues to be a pillar in this community."
Thompson then presented a scroll to Leslie in honour of the occasion.
Kincardine mayor Kenneth Craig said he is proud of the Legion for providing this lasting memorial to so many from this community who served - Lest We Forget.
"We will never forget their service, courage and sacrifice," said Leslie. "We will remember them not just one day in the year, but always."
Piper Ben Bilyard of the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band played "Amazing Grace," the ribbon was cut by Craig and Leslie, and Rutledge led a group of veterans across the crosswalk. Everyone was then invited to the Legion for refreshments.
