West Region OPP part of Civic Holiday weekend traffic campaign

(LONDON, ON) - The way you drive affects everyone. Safe driving means your family and friends get where they're going safely this Civic Holiday long weekend. Bad driving behaviours can hurt you, the ones you love, and others who share the road with you.

This long weekend, West Region OPP officers will embark on a safe-driving education and enforcement campaign aimed at ensuring drivers are paying attention behind the wheel, wearing a seatbelt, slowing down, driving soberly, and moving over for emergency vehicles.

West Region OPP members laid 1,425 charges during last year's campaign, including:

• 625 for speeding

• 148 seatbelt infractions

• 10 for distracted driving

• 47 for impaired driving

• 19 for failing to move over for emergency vehicles

Ontario's Move Over law serves to protect police, other emergency services and tow truck personnel who are parked or stopped on the roadside to carry out their work.

The law requires drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of a highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires drivers to move over and leave one lane between their vehicles and the parked emergency vehicle if it can be done safely.

Tragedy doesn't have to happen on our roads, highways and waterways. Making the right choices means everyone can enjoy the Civic Holiday long weekend safely.
