Bervie W.I. tours Stone Bridge Flour in Huron-Kinloss Township

The Bervie Women’s Institute met at the home of Sandra MacDonald, Wednesday morning. President Bev Berndt welcomed everyone and there were the usual openings along with the land acknowledgement.

The Roll Call, “Name a Canadian province and its flower,” was answered by eight members and one visitor. Betty Jean White read the minutes of the last meeting and Islay Eby gave the treasurer’s report. Sandra provided the Sunshine Report and Ellen Waye gave the Tweedsmuir report. Sandra and Betty Anne Thompson reported on the W.I. display that will be in the quilt tent at the International Plowing Match near Walkerton, Sept. 22-26 – several offered to volunteer.

A donation will be made to Global Medic regarding the Canadian wildfires. Sandra offered to purchase needed items for the Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey. The meeting closed with the closing Ode and the “King.” Thank you Joyce Roach for the goodies and drinks.

The ladies then travelled to Stone Bridge Flour on the 10th Concession in Huron-Kinloss Township, for a tour conducted by the owner, Angela Devitt.

She explained how she started her business in a small way and it has now expanded, with a new building, and milling and packaging equipment. She takes the grain, which is grown on the farm (both white and red wheat), and stone mills it into premium flour. She also stone mills other grains as well.

Her product is sold all over Bruce and Huron counties, with local distributors in Ripley and Kincardine. Several members purchased flour to do some baking. Sandra thanked Angela for allowing the group to tour her facility.

The next meeting will be held Sept. 2, at 10 a.m., at the Bervie United Church.
