The Huron United Football Club’s match-up, Aug. 4, pitted the team against FC Rohingya, which entered the match level with Huron United in the Tri-City Men's Soccer League table. The team’s best performance of the season netted a comprehensive 3-0 victory and sole possession of second place in the standings.
Huron United showed early proficiency on set pieces, with winger Drew Cobean expertly flicking a header onto attacker Adam Carty’s left foot, but the Rohingya keeper was able to meet Carty's shot before it found the top corner.
Rohingya attempted to play to its trademark strength in possession, but Huron United was diligent and communicative in defence, with centre-back Jason Leiskau stepping forward with a goal-front clearance in the 20th minute. Shortly thereafter, attacker James Jeffreys nearly converted a 19-yard free kick, but his low curling effort rolled just around the right post after evading the Rohingya wall. The game remained scoreless at the half-time whistle.
The long-gestating opener for Huron United began with a throw-in from Ryan Carty, which initiated an attack up the left flank. Jeffreys received the ball from A. Carty at the left edge of Rohingya's box, and created space with a croqueta feint that fooled the encroaching defenders. Jeffreys laid the ball off to Carty, who smashed a rising strike across the goal and beyond the keeper's reach to give Huron United a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute.
Huron United did well to forestall Rohingya's pursuit of an equalizer, but conceded a free kick in a dangerous area in the 72nd minute. Keeper Josh Coleman rose to the occasion with a clutch stop, and immediately instigated the counterattack with a bombed drop kick. The ensuing Huron United attack culminated when Cobean pinged a low driven cross from near the left corner flag that hit A. Carty on the instep on the brink of Rohingya's six-yard box, and Carty's confident finish doubled Huron United's lead.
Not content to rest on its laurels, Huron United continued to create offence through the closing phase of the match. In the 82nd minute, co-captain Jacob Hunsburger sent left-back Anderson Wolfe into open space on the left side with a through ball. Wolfe smartly retained possession and played a one-two with Cobean before lofting a cross into the box, where Leiskau's expert header picked out the top corner for a 3-0 lead. Huron United held the score-line into the final whistle, preserving the clean sheet for Coleman.
A. Carty was selected as Man of the Match for his decisive brace. Honourable mentions went to Leiskau and Coleman.
