To the Editor:
I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to Kincardine councillor Beth Blackwell for the dedication and commitment she has shown to our community during her time on council. I have really appreciated the thoughtful and professional way she has approached some of the difficult and sometimes very divisive issues facing Kincardine. Her recent comments regarding the Bluewater Trailer Park situation are a good example of the care and consideration she brings to these matters.
Serving in public office isn’t easy. It takes time, patience and a willingness to put yourself out there and make difficult decisions, knowing that not everyone will agree with you. Unfortunately, the tone of public discussion can sometimes cross a line that should never be crossed. Disagreement is part of democracy; personal attacks, intimidation and threats are not.
For those who are quick to criticize from behind a keyboard, perhaps it’s worth remembering that the people sitting around that council table are our neighbours. They are people who have families, lives and responsibilities of their own, yet they choose to give their time to our community. We may disagree with their decisions, but they still deserve to be treated with respect.
Knowing that Beth Blackwell has chosen not to seek another term, I wanted to make sure she knows that her efforts have been noticed and appreciated.
Thank you for giving your time, experience and energy to Kincardine. Your commitment to our community has made a difference, and I sincerely wish you all the best in whatever comes next.
