Kincardine Cubs host tournament, finish season in second and into playoffs

The Kincardine Cubs senior men's baseball team hosted a Midwestern Ontario Senior Baseball League (MOSBL) tournament at Connaught Park, Kincardine, Aug. 28-30, and made it to the fourth round before being eliminated.

The team has finished the season in second and heads into the first round of playoffs tomorrow (Sept. 13).

In tournament action in Kincardine, the Cubs defeated the Beamsville Yellow Jackets, 11-2, Friday night, on the Tout Field.

Tyson Kovats collected three hits in four at-bats. He singled twice in the seventh inning and singled in the second inning.

Kincardine won thanks, in part, to eight runs in the seventh inning. Scott Austin singled, scoring one run, Sheldon McBride doubled, scoring two runs, Michael Kritz doubled, scoring two runs, Dave Robinson singled, scoring one run, Kovats singled, scoring one run, and Jordan Beisel hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run.

Thomas Harmsworth pitched a complete game for Kincardine. The starter gave up five hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out four and walking three.

Kincardine tallied 14 hits in the game. McBride provided pop in the middle of the line-up, and led Kincardine with three runs batted in. The outfielder went two-for-four on the day. Kovats and Austin each collected three hits for Kincardine. Ryan Bester collected two hits for the Cubs in four at bats.

Kincardine went on to defeat the Owen Sound Baysox, 10-6, but lost to New Lowell, 11-6, Saturday, advancing to round four, Sunday, where the Cubs were downed by Tecumseh, 12-10, in extra innings.

Rain moved in Sunday afternoon, causing the cancellation of the final two games.

Kincardine enters play in second place in the MOSBL, with a 12-3 record in league play. The Cubs are also 7-2 in tournament play, winning the Bailey Durocher Memorial Tournament in Owen Sound, and losing in the finals of the London Talons Senior Tournament in London. The Cubs will look to get back to their winning ways from 2021-23 when they won the senior AA championship three years in a row.

Tomorrow (Sept. 13), the Cubs host the seventh-ranked Lucan Irish 9 in the first round of playoffs. The first two games in this best-of-three match-up will be on Tout Field at Connaught Park in Kincardine. First pitch for Game 1 is at 2 p.m. Game 2 is expected to start at about 5 p.m.
