Ripley-Huron Fall Fair to host heavy events championships

The Ripley-Huron Fall Fair runs next weekend, Sept. 25-26, and this year, the Ripley Agricultural Society is partnering with the International Highland Games Federation (IHGF) to bring the Amateur Men’s Canadian Championships to the fair.

The IHGF has gathered the best throwers in the country to battle it out to see who gets to represent Canada at the IHGF Amateur Men’s World Championships in Fefor, Norway.

The athletes will be competing in eight Scottish heavy-event disciplines:

  • Braemar and open stone

  • Heavy and light weight for distance

  • Heavy and light hammer

  • Weight over bar

  • Caber Toss

There will also be a contingent of women who will be competing on the field between the men's events to keep the breaks in the action to a minimum.

The athletes will take to the field Saturday at 8 a.m. and wrap up around 4 p.m. They will also be marching in the Mammoth Parade, and taking a short break after it for lunch.

The male athletes include:

  • Rylan Betker, 39, of Regina, Saskatchewan

  • Mike Brown, 31, of Mitchell, Ontario

  • Brandon Bernatowycz, 37, of London, Ontario
